Sayana

The brief

Sayana was written by Sajjan Lal Purohit around 1959 and well regarded in its time. No documentation of the production survives — there is nothing left to look at.

The work

Rather than reconstruct a staging that cannot be recovered, the piece performs the act for the camera and photographs it: a reading of the play turned into images of how it might have looked. It stands as a director’s note for an actual production.

Exhibited as a photo story in the Ashoka Archives Exhibition, 27–28 April 2026.
